Family set up trust in memory of Nicola
THE family of a Winsford woman who died from lung cancer at the age of 30 are set to hold an event to raise money in her memory. Nicola Penketh, of Caernarvon Avenue, who was a non-smoker, died on March 7 after a fight against cancer but her family believe she would still be alive if she had been given the drug Tarceva. Her mum Pat and stepdad Derek decided to set up the Nicky Penketh Trust so other people may be able to afford the lifesaving drug. Pat said: "I have been very upset and I'm still coming to terms with everything but it has been a great help knowing this good work is going on." The family will hold a fun day at Debees Music Bar on August 20 when there will be a range of fun events for all the family, with all proceeds going to the Nicky Penketh Trust. Pat said: "The trust is almost set up now and we are looking forward to starting the raise the money. It has been extremely hard work for us and very difficult to get through but hopefully this trust will make a difference in other people's lives." Nicola fell ill in 2004 and was eventually diagnosed with lung cancer after a tumour was found on her brain. Her family fought to get Tarceva but were told by North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary that it could not afford the £12,000 a year needed. When Nicola did finally receive the drug it was too late and she died one week later. Derek said: "A woman who had a trial with Tarceva was very similar to Nicky in that she was a young, non-smoking female and she has made an almost full recovery. "The most upsetting part is that we will never know if this drug could have helped Nicky." To make a donation to the Nicky Penketh Trust call Derek on 01663 747267.
