Jessica enjoys royal moment
HUNDREDS turned out for some medieval mayhem at the 51st Comberbach Rose Fete.
Star of the day was 11-year-old Jessica Owen, who was crowned as queen.
Sir Lancelot (James Shaw) rode into the arena on his steed and presented Lady Guinevere (Jane Proudfoot) with a scroll, who then read a medieval poem and pronounced the fete open.
Visitors enjoyed family jousting, birds of prey, stocks, a silent auction, stalls of all descriptions, a marching jazz band, licensed bar, refreshments and much more.
There was a fancy dress parade and guests included Carolina’s Jazz Band and Samba Blox.
One of the organisers, Bev Owen, said: “It was absolutely fantastic. The weather could not have been better.
“We had loads of comments saying the fete gets better each year.”
She added: “We are hoping to raise between £3,000 and £4,000 which will go to groups in the village.”
Best visiting queen was Davenham Carnival Queen Stacey O’Mahony; best car was Cheshire County Junior Queen Samantha Mainwaring; best float was Comberbach Primary School; best adult fancy dress was Sue Ditchfield, as Shrek’s wife and best junior fancy dress was Jessica Wright, as a statue.
In the fun run Bev Owen and Sue Scott won the George Walker Trophy for raising the most money – £740 for Children with Leukaemia.
Niamh Webber Howard, who raised £115, won the Marion Taylor Trophy for raising the most money in the junior section.
The best scarecrow was the thatchers at Kidbrook Cottage, the most humorous was Damsel in dis dress, the most lifelike was the Maypole dancers, most topical was medieval lady and most original was Nelson and Lady Hamilton.
