College stalwarts offer fond farewells
IT was the end of an era for staff and students at a Northwich college after two senior members of staff retired. Cherith Nixon and Tim Hill, both vice principals at Sir John Deane's College, clocked up a combined total of 43 years' service. They have seen thousands of students pass through over the past few decades and are sad to leave behind what they call the 'energy and vibrant atmosphere' that fills the corridors and classrooms. Cherith, who became vice principal in 1984, said: "Sir John Deane's is an amazing place. "Although the college has grown, the collegiate atmosphere here hasn't changed at all. There is a tremendous sense of warmth and consideration for staff and for students." Tim has managed most areas of college life and was appointed as a deputy head in 1985. One of his outstanding achievements was leading the college through a pilot project to manage its own finances under the guidance of the education authority. At the time this was a revolutionary step and the college has handled its own budgets ever since. He said: "There is a tremendous atmosphere of care and support here. Every single student holds the door open for you - there is a mutual respect that runs throughout the college whether staff or students." Andrew Jones, principal at SJD, said: "Cherith and Tim have given tremendous service to the college for more than 20 years each. "They will be hugely missed not just for the range and quality of all that they have done for the college during their long and distinguished careers here, but also because they are tremendous personalities and lovely people."
