COMBERBACH WI
THE July meeting of the Comberbach WI was a very hot one, with 45 members and three visitors attending. Members did extremely well at the Cheshire Show this year, Mrs Jefferson and Mrs Roodhouse getting full marks for their pictures. For individual classes, six got second place and one got third place. Congratulations were offered to each and every one. The village fete cake stall did well also, selling cakes quickly. The president introduced Mr Walker, who gave a talk on knot tying. He is a member of the Knot Tyers Guild and has been fascinated with rope since he was a young boy. He demonstrated the uses rope can have, especially on ships. He brought with him boat bungs, mats, a covered demijohn, even a crown. The Japanese are famous for their knotting. In earlier times when navigating in heavy fog, boats had to use a whip for communication. Mr Walker ended his talk by showing a cat-o-nine-tails, which sailors were whipped with for their misdemeanours. August's meeting will be a tasty evening for members.
